Iron rich clay with moderate quartz inclusions (<0.5mm) and moderate to abundant Malvernian rock (acid igneous) inclusions (3.0-4.0mm) and occasional white mica flecks. Can be fired to a dark grey or a dark grey core with reddish brown surfaces
No glaze. Very occasional applied strip decoration
East of Malvern Hills, WORCESTERSHIRE
No kilns have been identified but extensive thin section work (Vince 1984) has identified the source of this ware as the area between the Malvern Hills and the River Severn. Vessels in this fabric reach their maximum distribution in the 13th century when they are found in Shrewsbury and Cardiff. The main area of influence, however, is within a 30 mile radius of the Malvern Hills
