Fabric 42.2 - Dressel 2-4 type amphora (Catalan fabric)


Hard fabric with common quartz and feldspar (ranging between 0.1-3.0mm but not normally exceeding c.2.0mm), light composite rock fragments and sparse gold mica (<0.5mm). Gold mica is also common on the surface of the fabric (Tomber and Dore 1998, 91).
Distinctive red-brown to red in colour throughout.

Catalan coast, SPAIN
Principally used to contain wine, but occasionally used for fish-based sauces, olive-oil and dates. Produced at various kilns along the Catalan coast, concentrating in the Barcelona area (Peacock and Williams 1986, 93). This ware has a widespread distribution throughout the western Provinces. In Worcestershire, vessels of of this fabric have been identified at Sidbury (Williams 1992b, 62-63) and New Police Station, Castle Street (Griffin 2002, 119) in Worcester and in Droitwich (Williams 1992a, 1:G8).
Roman (Late 1st century BC to late 1st century AD)
Production may have continued into the 2nd century. Most commonly found on early Roman sites in Britain (Tyers 1996, 90).
