Fabric 64.1 - Worcester-type sandy glazed ware


Iron rich clay with abundant rounded and subangular quartz (<1.0mm), chert and rounded silacious sandstone inclusions.
Sherds usually have orange to red surfaces with a grey core but some are grey throughout.

Decoration
Vessels are glazed with a green lead glaze. Some jug types have a white slip under the glaze. Vessels in this fabric are decorated with a combination of implied, incised and stamped decoration.
Widespread but unidentified kiln sites, WORCESTERSHIRE
Vessels in this fabric are the products of a number of unidentified kilns in and around Worcester. This fabric was probably produced at the same kilns as fabric 55. Sherds of this fabric are commonly found all over Worcestershire but the distribution of different forms varies. Jugs have been found in Wales, Shrewsbury, Hereford and Gloucester although few are found south of Gloucester.
Medieval (Late 11th century to 14th century)
This fabric first occurs in the very late 11th or 12th century but the main floruit of the industry dates to the 13th to 14th centuries
