Fabric 79 - Merida-type ware


Iron rich clay with abundant large mica flakes (<1.0mm) and moderate quartz inclusions (<3.0mm). Very occasional grog inclusions (<5.0mm).
The fabric is usually oxidised pink or orange throughout but some vessels have a reddish brown fabric with red surfaces. Reduced vessels have buff to grey cores and internal surfaces and sometimes pinky grey external surfaces.

Merida/Alentejo, IBERIA
Produced in the Alentejo region of Portugal, spreading over the Spanish border to Merida. It is mainly found in coastal ports in Britain, but has been found inland in this region in Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester.
Medieval to Post Medieval (13th to 17th century)
Imported to Britain from the 13th century but most common in the 16th and 17th. Vessels found in Worcestershire date from the 14th to the 16th centuries.
