Fabric 72 - Brown glazed speckled ware


Iron rich clay with quartz (<0.5mm), occasional red sandstone (<2.0mm) and infrequent limestone inclusions.
Usually orange red, but when fired at lower temperatures the fabric is more orange and at higher temperatures, dark red to purple.

Decoration
Brown to dark brown glaze inside and out, which contains small sand fragments that have not fused, giving a distinctive speckled appearance. Some vessels are decorated with white clay pads which may be stamp decorated or moulded.
Unlocated, WEST MIDLANDS
The source of this fabric has not been identified. Thin section work has indicated that the inclusions are typical of glacial sands covering a considerable area of the West Midlands the Lower Severn and the Avon Lowlands.
Medieval to Post Medieval (15th to late 16th/17th century)
Dated on typological grounds. The bulk of the vessels in this fabric found in Worcestershire are likely to be 16th century.
