Fabric 46.1 - Stamford type ware (unglazed)


An iron free to iron poor clay with abundant fine quartz of <0.2mm and sparse red inclusions of <3.0mm.
Usually off-white or buff but occasionally pinkish orange.

Stamford, LINCOLNSHIRE
This ware was produced in Stamford, Lincolnshire between the mid 9th century and the mid 13th century. The trade in Stamford ware was significant in the 10th century and widespread prior to the Conquest. Stamford ware in a similar range of forms has been found in Worcester and Droitwich.
Saxon to Medieval (10th to 11th century)
In Worcestershire all the forms identified so far date from the 10th to the 11th centuries, although the Stamford ware industry was producing from the mid 9th century until the mid 13th century.
