Fabric 57 - Cotswolds unglazed ware


Iron rich clay with oolitic limestone inclusions (<0.1-3.0mm), some calcite and shell fragments and some red iron ore inclusions (<2.0mm). Inclusions leeched out to leave voids in many examples.
The surface colour can vary from orange/buff to dark grey, although the core is nearly always reduced to a light grey colour.

Haresfield, GLOUCESTERSHIRE
This fabric is very similar to Gloucestershire TF41B which is thought to have been made at Harefield. With fabric 57.1 it is part of a tradition of limestone tempered wares produced in the Cotswold region. It is found as far north as Droitwich but the distribution is concentrated in the lower Severn valley.
