Fabric 143.1 - Ham Green type A


Iron-poor fabric with frequent quartz inclusions, common sandstone, calcite and chert inclusions, all measuring between 0.1-0.4mm and clay pellets of <1mm.
Usually reduced with a grey core, pale grey margins and buff to brown surfaces.

External glaze that varies from dark green to pale yellow-green with a combination of incised lines and diamond roller stamp decoration.
Ham Green, AVON
Vessels of this type were produced in Ham Green on the outskirts of modern Bristol. They were distributed in quantity around Bristol, the south Wales coast, south-east Ireland, the Wye Valley and the southern Severn Valley. A number of examples have been found in Worcester, although their distribution within Worcestershire is still unclear.
Medieval (12th century)
Almost identical vessels to those found in Worcester were found at Dundas Wharf in Bristol, in deposits dated by dendrochronology to before 1140 AD.
