Fabric 42.4 - Rhodian amphora


Hard fabric with abundant well-sorted quartz (<0.5mm) which may be stained red and sparse ill-sorted limestone inclusions (<2.0mm).
Pale buff throughout.

Rhodes and the Aegean region, GREECE
Principally used for the transportation of wine but also figs and honey on occasion. Several sources of production for this amphora form are known in the general Aegean region, including the island of Rhodes. The type was widely distributed throughout the eastern and western Mediterranean, along the Rhine and in Britain (Tyers 1996, 93-94). Examples from this region have been identified from Sidbury, Worcester (Williams 1992b, 62-63).
Roman (Late 1st century BC to early 2nd century AD)
Imported into Britain from the mid 1st century AD until the mid-2nd century.
